The man that was shot by a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper following a chase Sunday afternoon has died.
Authorities were called to Interstate 10 and Graytown at about 3 p.m. for reports of a shooting. DPS spokesman Deon Cockrell said a trooper pulled over the suspect for a traffic violation on Farm-to-Market 78. The suspect was traveling the wrong way in traffic. He gave a fake name, prompting the trooper to arrest him, Cockrell said. The suspect fled the scene and the trooper lost sight of him until a DPS helicopter located him in Bexar County.
Shots were exchanged, Cockrell said, and both men were wounded. The trooper was shot in the arm, while the suspect was shot in the stomach. Cockrell said the suspect died of his injuries on Monday and has been identified as 33-year-old Ernest Manuel Montelongo, of San Antonio, according to the Associated Press. The trooper is expected to be okay.
