A Chicago man was sentenced to five years in prison on May 11 after attempting to flee a traffic stop in Carroll, Iowa, which resulted in a dramatic car chase in March, 2021. Newly released bodycam footage from the Carroll Police Department shows the moment Officer Patrick McCarthy stood in front of the car and pointed a pistol at the driver after repeatedly ordering him to step out of his vehicle. Refusing to do so, Guider attempted to flee the scene and drove his car forward into McCarthy, who was pushed onto the hood and clung to it as the driver continued forward. Prior to the incident, Guider had an outstanding warrant in an Illinois forgery case and was facing arrest. The officer suffered a broken back after being flung from the car and took nearly a year to fully recover, Iowa Capital Dispatch reported. The driver, identified as 29-year old Dennis Guider, Jr., was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to causing serious injury with a vehicle. Another felony count related to fleeing police was dismissed as part of the plea deal reached in March.
