CCTV footage shows the man swaggering out of a building in Yancheng, Jiangsu province, on November 19, before spotting the unsuspecting pooch.
He then marches towards it in an apparent attempt to chase it off but the tables turn spectacularly.
Just as he lunges forward, his foot slips from beneath him, sending him crashing face-first into the ground.
The startled dog bolts to safety, leaving the would-be tough guy sprawled on the floor - looking thoroughly humiliated.
Locals said the man was left more embarrassed than injured, while the dog trotted away completely unscathed.
