A 'clever' cow has been heaped with praise after using her body to stop her calf being washed away in rapid flood water from Storm Debi - as they had to swim to safety together.

Neil Heseltine was checking on his cattle yesterday afternoon [November 13] when he noticed a gang of Belted Galloway cows were surrounded by flood water.

The 55-year-old, who runs Hill Top Farm in Malham, North Yorkshire, anxiously watched as a group of about 20 cows chose to swim through the five-foot-deep pool.
