説明

This 70-stone bison cheekily used a stunned tourist's car as a scratching post - ignoring the frustrated driver's honking and forcing them to wait.

Steve Hostetler stuck his head out of his motor's sunroof to film the clip at a Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge near Denver, Colorado, US.

The 59-year-old's footage shows the bold North American Bison standing in front of a stopped white Volkswagen while it rubs its head from left to right as if to scratch an itch.

After around 15 seconds their bonnet being used 'like a scratching post', the driver beeps but the unfazed beast doesn't stop satisfying its craving.

Steve says those inside the car, who he believes were tourists, must have got the 'surprise of their life' when the bison approached their vehicle.

He says cheeky bison stopped scratching after around a minute and joined the rest of the herd to wander down the road to allow the vehicle to continue on its way.

The photographer shared the video to Facebook last month [Feb 24] to warn wildlife lovers that 'bison don't follow rules' and they 'might find your car attractive'.

Steve, from Aurora, Colorado, said: "The herd happened to be on the road and I looked behind and saw this bison rub its head to scratch itself on the hood of the car.

"They blew their horn to get the bison to move away but it didn't have any effect.

"I think it thought the car was a good place to do that and took advantage of the humans being around.

"I think they were tourists. They must have got the surprise of their life.

"It's interesting to see. It shows an animal doing what animals do and they don't care if there's a human there.

"They can be volatile and they move very quickly so I was hoping the bison didn't get aggressive and luckily nobody was hurt."

The clip has been viewed more than 50,000 times on Facebook.

Steve's posts said: "These roads belong to the bison and You must ALWAYS respect the Bison and keep a safe distance away.

"They don't have to follow the same rules! They may find your car attractive! Just sit back, turn on some Marvin Gaye for them and wait it out. Lol.

"No bison were harmed in the making of this video. And beeping is ineffective."

One commented: "They are in command and don't think differently."

A second said: "Nothing like a good face rub, eh!"

A third added: "He's itchy!"
