This viral video with more than 17 million views shows a driver stepping away from his broken-down electric car seconds before a speeding lorry rear-ends it.
The heart-stopping moment was captured by traffic cameras on the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway over the city of Jiaxing in China’s eastern Zhejiang Province.
The clip shows the driver Li, 18, speaking on the phone with traffic police as his rental car is stranded on the hard shoulder, its battery having run flat halfway through his journey.
He steps away from the broken-down car and climbs to the other side of the crash barrier as advised by the authorities on the phone.
Seconds later, the heavy goods vehicle slams into the back of the electric car, swiping it away and out of camera shot as the stunned young driver escapes in terror.
Motorway police said Li called them when his EvCard car sharing vehicle broke down.
They advised him to turn on his hazard lights and place an emergency triangle roughly 500 feet behind the car.
The police then advised him to wait safely on the other side of the crash barrier, with the crash happening moments later.
The authorities said the lorry driver, who has not been named and who was not injured, was tired after having driven for seven hours without a break.
Li received his licence in January and is still in his learner phase, during which driving on motorways unaccompanied is against the law.
The crash is still being investigated.
