説明

This is the moment - seen nearly three million times in under 24 hours - that a driverless vehicle floats through a flooded underground car park before seemingly ‘reversing’ into the only free parking spot as waters rise.

Dashcam footage from a parked car in the city of Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province in South China, captured the bizarre incident during the recent floods on 22nd May.

The floods were triggered by torrential rains that have killed at least four people, and the owner of the dashcam was presumably only able to reach his car in the days after the floodwaters receded.

In the footage, parked vehicles can be seen floating inside the underground car park, which has been filled with murky water flooding in from ground level.

As the water level continues to rise above the car bonnet and windscreen, a driverless white saloon is seen floating into view.

Nearby car alarms go off and hazard lights flash as the floating vehicle stops in front of the parking spot before appearing to reverse perfectly into the space.

As the floodwaters rise above the dashcam vehicle, the driverless saloon appears to have parked in the available space without crashing into any of the nearby cars.

It was still unclear whether the vehicle had already been inside the car park, or whether it floated in from street level.

Officials in the city of 13 million are still involved in extensive clean-up operations since the worst of the flooding, but the Emergency Management Office warned of further heavy rains expected between 23rd and 26th May.

Social media images have shown cars roofs submerged chest-high floodwaters as streets turn into rivers during the deluge.

Officials said the death toll remains at four, with several thousand displaced by the disaster so far.
