This is the moment two secondary school teachers ‘cheat death’ when their small car is rear-ended by a distracted lorry driver and crushed beyond recognition against the back of a concrete mixer.

The heart-stopping accident, in which the police said the woman and her passenger somehow escaped with only minor injuries, happened yesterday (15th June) in the town of Longhua in Xianyou County, which is in the coastal city of Putian in China’s eastern province of Fujian.

Local traffic camera footage shows the teachers approaching a junction and stopping about 5 metres (16 feet) behind the concrete mixer at a red light.

Moments later, the green heavy goods vehicle comes into frame and slams right into the back of the small white hatchback, which is pushed forwards and flattened against the back of the cement lorry.

Shocking images of the aftermath show the teacher in the driver’s seat appearing alive and well, despite being pinned in the mangled wreckage.

Her passenger also survived, but neither could get out of the misshapen metal box which used to be their car, Xianyou police said yesterday.

Members of the local fire service helped pull the two lorries apart and began freeing the victims, which the authorities said also included the heavy goods vehicle driver pinned in his cabin.

Footage shows the injured teacher being lifted out of the wreckage, while pictures of the wreckage show her hatchback now unrecognisable after the accident.

Local police said the two secondary school teachers, who reported 'cheated death', suffered minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital.

The lorry driver, who was reportedly distracted and did not notice the stopped car in front of him, also survived with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident was still under investigation at the time of writing.
