This is the moment a flock of confused parrots gather on the wall of an apartment block in Brazil with experts baffled as to why.

Residents say scores of the Maracana parakeets mob the block in Sao Paulo every day and cling to the side of the building for no obvious reason.

The footage shows the large flock perched on the front of the condo building and squawking loudly.

Sports teacher Bruno Henrique, who has lived in the building for 10 years, told local media: ""In the beginning, the noise bothered us a little and, sometimes, we woke up early to the sound of them.

""But, as time went by, we got used to it and there are days when we don't even notice them.""

Expert Fabio Ferrao Videira, the President of the Centre for Ornithological Studies in Brazil, believes the birds could be mimicking natural behaviour in the wild.

He told local media: ""There are reports of flocks of parrots congregating in mudflats on riverbanks and hills in order to eat clay to improve mineral-deficient nutrition and also to neutralise toxins from some of the plants they feed on.""

But the lack of damage to the building over the years suggests that this might not be the reason, according to local media.

Urban birds specialist, biologist Raquel Colombo, said it shows the adaptability of the parrots.

She said: ""This situation as a whole demonstrates the ability of these species to advance into urban areas and occupy new spaces that are available. It's an achievement.""
