説明

This is the moment the sky turns a deep blood red as stunned residents record the rare optical phenomenon unfolding overhead following a storm.

The video shows clouds and daylight bathed in intense red hues, triggering confusion and concern among locals in the southern Pandeglang area in the Indonesian province of Banten on 18th December.

Residents were reportedly left in awe as the dramatic colour transformation appeared suddenly during the afternoon after heavy rain.

Videos and images were widely shared on social media as the unusual sight sparked speculation across the community.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, the BMKG, confirmed the event was a natural atmospheric optical phenomenon known as Rayleigh scattering.

The BMKG said the occurrence was normal and could be explained scientifically.

The effect occurs when sunlight is refracted as the sun sits low in the sky or approaches sunset, causing light to travel a much longer path through the Earth’s atmosphere.

As a result, only colours with longer wavelengths, such as red, orange and yellow, are able to penetrate the atmosphere and reach the human eye.

The intensity of the colour was strengthened by high concentrations of water vapour and the presence of aerosol particles such as dust or pollutants in the air, according to the BMKG.

Because it was raining in Pandeglang at the time, and the moisture in the atmosphere made the red reflection on the clouds appear even more vivid.

Authorities urged the public to remain calm and assured that the red sky was not connected to any impending natural disasters.
