説明

This is the moment giant icicles suddenly break free from a frozen waterfall and crash down just inches from families and children standing below.

The incident unfolded after crowds gathered to admire the frozen cascade at Valaste waterfall, the tallest waterfall in the Baltics located near the town of Johvi, in north-eastern Estonia on Saturday, 10th January.

The video shows a huge mass of ice tearing away from the cliff face and plunging downwards as people below scatter in panic.

Around a dozen visitors, including children, are seen running as chunks of ice smash into the frozen river beneath the waterfall.

One person reportedly very nearly became buried under the falling debris as the ice shattered on impact.

Authorities said the waterfall froze over around the new year, as it often does during periods of cold winter weather.

Hundreds of people visited the site over the holidays and again last weekend to view the frozen spectacle.

A nature photographer, Sergei Listov, said he initially believed the circulating footage had been generated by artificial intelligence.

He said that after reports from several media outlets confirmed the video was genuine, he realised it showed a truly dangerous situation.

Listov added: "What is especially sad is that people went there with children and in fact put all those who were down below in serious danger.

"Fortunately, everything ended well this time and no one was seriously injured. But it should be a major lesson for all of us that if there are official boundaries somewhere, you must not cross them."

Local authorities have since installed additional warning signs near the waterfall to alert visitors to watch their step and keep their distance.

The municipality has also limited the number of people allowed on the waterfall stairway to 10 at any one time.

Officials said Valaste Waterfall is safest to view from the marked hiking and educational trail.
