This is the moment a concrete floor exploded while a group of friends were having a barbecue in southeastern China.
CCTV footage taken in Puning City in Guangdong province on February 10 shows the group huddled around a table while a man cooked the meat on a grill. The floor under the hot coals then appeared to explode, spewing out sparks and sending everyone fleeing in panic.
Mr. Chen, who was part of the group, said: ‘The barbecue started at 10 o’clock in the evening. It was 1 o’clock in the morning when the concrete floor exploded.’
He added that a friend’s clothes were singed, but no one was injured.
Concrete, when exposed to extremely high temperatures, can explode violently. French and Swiss scientists who experimented on the material said water trapped inside the concrete expands and becomes agitated.
Because concrete is typically non-porous, pressure continues building up inside with nowhere to go until an explosion occurs, releasing the pent-up energy.
