Tourists were baffled when they tried and failed to douse flames with water - but the fire kept on reigniting.
Footage shows the swimmers splashing water into the blaze that had sparked between two large rocks on the river bank in Chongqing province, China, on August 5.
But despite their efforts to extinguish the fire, it kept flaring back up without weakening.
Flammable gas methane - which is present in rivers and streams - could have caused the flames when it began leaking from under the ground.
