The bizarre video shows a step ladder trapping a man on the roof after seemingly walking away by itself in the front yard of a snow-covered family home.
The surveillance camera clip shows how the piece of equipment seemed to walk away from a man who was clearing snow from the roof of his house in the city of Changchun in Jilin Province, China.
The six-foot step ladder can be seen slowly making its way across the patio, and shuffling from one side to another as each of its legs jumps from the ground in the footage from December 15.
It is likely that the heavy wind could actually be the cause of the movement, said media.
Witness Mr Wang reportedly saw the handyman climbing up the ladder and cleaning the roof that day.
He said he was astonished when sometime later he saw the man approaching the edge of the roof to climb down, but the ladder was not there.
Wang, who initially thought someone had stolen the ladder, said: 'We were all very surprised at the time and we didn't know who took the ladder away.'
Having realised that the handyman was stuck on the roof amid the cold, neighbours rushed to their homes to get ropes and planks in order to make a temporary ladder and bring him down.
They successfully rescued him sometime later.
The handyman added: 'I never thought that I would encounter such danger, let alone that there would be many enthusiastic people to help me.'
