This is the incredible moment a tree spouted water when police cut into its trunk in India.
Footage shows officers hacking into the Terminalia tomentosa tree, also known as the Indian laurel or crocodile bark tree, at the Papikonda National Park in Andhra Pradesh on March 30.
A jet of water poured out from the gash leaving the cops baffled.
Forest service officials said they were informed by the Konda Reddi tribe about the tree's remarkable ability to act as a natural water reservoir during dry summer months.
The tree water was potable but reportedly had a sour taste and is believed by some locals to have medicinal properties.
Indian Forest Service official Narentheren said: 'During parched summers, the Indian Laurel tree Terminalia tomentosa stores water. The water has a strong smell and tastes sour.'
Local media reported that up to six liters of water can be collected from a full-grown Terminalia tomentosa tree.
Speaking in an interview with ABP Live, Professor Rakhi Chaturvedi, head of the Biosciences and Bioengineering Department at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, said the tree's internal water storage was an adaptation to survive drought.
She said that during hot temperatures when the rate of water loss is high, the tree's xylem cells - tissue that transport water - has decreased ability to conduct water.
The tree also begins to withdraw moisture from its internal storage compartments like sapwood, resulting in an accumulation of water.
She said: 'The risk of xylem cavitation can be minimised by directing water discharge from the stem's internal storage compartments like sapwood and intercellular spaces. In conclusion, internal water storage plays a crucial role in maintaining a tree's effective hydraulic functionality, especially during declining soil water content in summer.'
