Dozens were injured when fireworks exploded at a religious festival in India.
Footage shows flames and explosions amid the massive crowd during the Veerarkavu Theyyam Festival in Neeleswaram, Kasaragod, on October 28.
Local media reported that the incident occurred late Monday night when a fireworks storage facility near the Veerarkavu temple caught fire, resulting in more than 150 injuries, with eight people reported to be in serious condition.
Authorities stated that 97 of the injured were rushed to hospitals in Kasaragod, Kannur, and Mangaluru for immediate care.
Police indicated that the temple administration had not obtained the necessary permissions for the fireworks display.
The Veerarkavu Theyyam Festival is a vibrant cultural and religious celebration held in Kerala, particularly in the Kasaragod district. This festival showcases Theyyam, a traditional ritual dance form characterized by elaborate costumes, intricate makeup, and dynamic performances that depict local deities, heroes, and myths.
In another incident, a fireworks shop erupted in flames, sending explosives hurtling toward customers in Hyderabad on October 27. Police reported that a woman sustained minor injuries, and at least eight cars parked nearby were damaged.
Firecrackers and fireworks are significant pyrotechnic devices in India, used for religious festivities and cultural events. As a result, firework-related injuries are common in the country, with hundreds of individuals injured or killed each year.
