This is the terrifying moment an out-of-control truck crashed into a shop when the driver allegedly fainted at the wheel.
Winai Wanjing, 57, was driving the Hino cement mixer back to his company when he reportedly blacked out while passing through an intersection in Saraburi province, Thailand, on November 12 evening.
CCTV footage shows the vehicle hitting a red Nissan sedan before ploughing through the wall of a small grocery store with a loud screech. Workers inside scrambled out of the way as the truck crashed into several shelves.
Police Major Paitoon Meepon of the Kaeng Khoi Police Station said officers received a report at 7:15 pm. They arrived at the scene, where Winai was waiting to talk to police.
The police investigator said: ‘We have not charged the driver yet. We will still review the security camera footage to determine the cause of the accident before proceeding with legal action.'
Cops said the store heavily damaged, with appliances, shattered windows, and destroyed groceries scattered on the floor.
The shop owner, Lamprai, suffered minor injuries on her right leg.
She said: 'I was accepting payment from a customer when I heard the loud noise. I stood up to check and saw the truck heading straight for the shop without slowing down. It crashed into my store and destroyed most of the liquor bottles on the shelves.'
The female driver of the red Nissan car said she was with her sister crossing the junction when the collision occurred.
She said: 'I was driving forward because the traffic light turned green. However, the truck moved straight towards us. I tried to steer my car away but it was too late, and it hit the right car door. My sister and I were shocked, but we are relieved that we are safe.'
Winai claimed he may have blacked out due to his high blood pressure, for which he takes medication. He was taken to the Kaeng Khoi Police Station for questioning.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
