This is the heart-stopping moment a mother and son narrowly avoided a speeding pick-up truck that crashed into their car.
Suwannee Tothae, 31, and her son, 7, were loading laundry baskets into the back of their minivan when an out-of-control pickup crashed into the vehicle in Ratchaburi province, on February 15.
CCTV footage shows Suwannee raising a hand to close the rear door just as the pickup slammed into the van, sparing her by mere inches. The van rolled off the road with husband Supreecha Chinsathien, 31, still inside.
The shocked father said: 'I was sitting in the middle of the backseats and answering messages on my phone when I heard a loud boom.
'Before I knew it, I was bouncing around inside the car. I did not fall unconscious so I quickly got out to check on my wife and son. They were behind the car, so I thought the truck had hit them.
'Fortunately, they were fine. However, the crash has left my son traumatised. We will also lose income because we use our van for business, and now we have to have it repaired.'
Suwannee said she did not hear the truck speeding toward her. She said: 'If you look at the footage, I was turning to the right side. I also did not see the truck because I had my back turned.'
The truck driver, 74, claimed he had tried to avoid another car, resulting in the crash. He was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
A police spokesman said: 'We will summon both parties for a negotiation, but we have to wait until the injured driver has recovered.'
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
