This is the shocking moment a rampaging stray cow knocked over a motorcycle rider outside a shop.
The man was sitting on his vehicle in front of a store when the brown bovine, running along the road, struck him from behind in Mangrol, Gujarat, on March 24.
Footage shows the animal chasing a calf before ramming into the local, who then fell to the ground.
As he hit the pavement, the cow stomped on his body, leaving him in pain. Nearby residents and shop owners quickly rushed to help him stand up.
The impact left the victim injured, and he was reportedly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Stray cattle have become a significant issue in the country, affecting agriculture, traffic safety, and public health. The 2019 Livestock Census reported that India had approximately 5 million wild cows.
Strict anti-slaughter laws and enforcement have led farmers to abandon unproductive cattle due to the financial burden of their upkeep. The decline in the use of cattle for agricultural work, combined with the inability to sell them, has resulted in more animals being left to roam.
It is partly due to devout locals who follow Hindu customs, with cows regarded as sacred animals that cannot be eaten or slaughtered once they have stopped producing milk. The majority of states ban the sale or slaughter of cows.
Instead of dealing with the economic burden of keeping their spent cattle, many farmers let the beasts roam the streets—leading to chaos when the animals become agitated and turn their fury on humans.
The government has established cattle shelters and implemented birth control measures to manage the stray cattle population. However, overcrowding in shelters and the high costs of maintaining these facilities remain ongoing challenges.
