CCTV footage shows the woman turning on the device and directing heat onto her child's head next to a power outlet in Guangdong, China.
Moments later, the appliance suddenly emitted sparks, prompting the frantic parent to move it away from the boy and drop the hair dryer on the floor on October 14.
The child burst into tears when the sparks hit his arm, causing the worried mother to check on and comfort him.
The youngster did not sustain any serious injuries from the incident.
