A suspect crashed a stolen ambulance with a patient inside in Michigan.
Police responded to a single-vehicle rollover at Novi and 10 Mile Roads at around 3:15 pm on Friday, October 24.
The injured driver was being treated in the back of a Medstar ambulance when a first responder shouted that a man was stealing the emergency vehicle.
Novi Police Chief Erick Zinser identified the suspect as Changlin Li.
Li, 33, allegedly drove at speeds exceeding 70 mph, passed through a construction zone, blew a tyre, and ‘disregarded a traffic signal' at Eight Mile and Beck Roads, causing a GMC Yukon to collide with the vehicle.
A 72-year-old man in the GMC was taken to the hospital with a dislocated shoulder and broken ribs.
Officials said Li tried to flee the scene and attempted to grab an officer's gun. A knife was recovered from him, and authorities added that he again tried to seize a holstered weapon while at the hospital.
Li has been charged with one count of carjacking, one count of fleeing and eluding, two counts of assaulting, resisting, and obstructing police, two counts of attempting to disarm a police officer, and one count of carrying a concealed weapon.
A judge set Li's bond at 5 million USD. His next hearing is scheduled for November 3.
