This is the terrifying moment a policeman was knocked down by a wild leopard in India.
Officers were patrolling a neighbourhood in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, when the beast lounging on a tree pounced on them on Tuesday afternoon.
Footage shows residents panicking as the spotted predator leapt at police constable Krushnat Patil of the Shahupuri Police Station, knocking the officer to the ground as he fought back with a stick.
The leopard then retreated while Krushnat fled into a building as the creature continued its rampage.
Officers were earlier sent to the residential area following reports from several women about a leopard sighting near Vivekananda College.
Following the attack, authorities sealed off the area and stepped up patrols around Nagala Park and nearby establishments. Residents were urged to stay indoors and refrain from going out at night when the leopards are most active.
Officials said combined teams from the Forest Department and police are continuing the search.
The attack comes after an elderly couple were reportedly killed by a leopard in the same city last month.
Nino Kank, 75, and Rukminibai Kank, 70, were allegedly mauled when they were dragged from their home on October 18.
Their mangled bodies were discovered by horrified villagers near the Kadvi Dam the next morning.
The leopard population in India has grown from 12,852 in 2018 to 13,874 in 2022, according to the 'Status of Leopards in India 2022' report, released by the Union Environment Ministry on February 29.
The development of homes in and around forests has led to an increase in conflicts with humans.
