This is the shocking moment an illegal firecracker workshop exploded, severely injuring one person at a housing block in Thailand.
The blast tore through the apartment in Samut Sakhon province while tenant Kwanchai Phut-udom was assembling homemade fireworks for the coming New Year.
CCTV footage shows the explosion obliterating his room in a bright orange flash, with the shockwave setting off car alarms at 9:42 pm local time on December 4.
Smoke filled the debris-strewn corridor on the second floor before Kwanchai was seen emerging from the room with his unharmed wife. The distraught woman was crying in panic as she helped her critically wounded husband limp toward a bench.
Kwanchai was rushed to the Vichaivej International Hospital in Om Noi with severely injured hands and legs, and serious burns across his body.
Police and an explosive ordnance team later arrived to find his room transformed into an illegal fireworks warehouse, with PVC pipes, loose saltpetre, wooden sticks, assembly stands, and dozens of finished firecrackers among the rubble.
Ten nearby rooms were damaged, but officers said the other tenants were unharmed as they were away at the time of the blast.
Police Colonel Possapong Montha, superintendent of Krathum Baen Police Station, said: 'Police and forensic officers have collected all evidence at the scene. We will also question the injured man and his wife.
‘The materials and items inside the room were also collected as evidence for further legal action.'
Apartment owner Sangduen Pleumthanom said the couple had been living in the building for more than a decade.
She added: 'Kwanchai is usually quiet but sociable, often going fishing after work. I had no idea he was secretly making fireworks. None of us did. I only learned about it after the incident. Everyone here just goes back to their room after work.'
Cops said Kwanchai faces charges of manufacturing explosives without permission, which is punishably by one to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of 2,000 to 40,000 baht (47 to 941 GBP).
He also faces additional charges for 'causing an explosion likely to endanger the safety of people or property', with a penalty of up to seven years' imprisonment and a fine of up to 140,000 baht (3,293 GBP).
