Bungling sports chiefs are being probed over a bizarre square running track with right-angle corners.
Council officials built the new 16-acre sports complex, which features the rectangular course, to hold sporting events in Songkhla, southern Thailand.
But angry locals have criticised its 'dangerous and impractical' shape that had sharp corners instead of the usual gentle curves of a track oval. The project had cost 35 million baht (833,270 GBP) of local taxpayers' money.
Aerial footage shows the race course enclosing a football pitch, with right-angle bends where athletes are meant to turn.
Local authorities said the complex was built to host more events in the province, as renting private venues often led to scheduling conflicts.
They added that the football pitch was prioritised, but there was insufficient space to install a standard track.
Dech-it Khaothong, a former MP for Songkhla, said: 'The track was never intended for athletic purposes but only for an exercise path for walking. The track is only a bonus, and as for the pitch, it meets all international standards.'
Following public outrage, the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) investigated the running track on January 14.
The commission noted several concerns, such as maintenance and drainage. They said the construction contract will be reviewed.
Ram Wasuthanapinyo, director of NACC Songkhla, said: 'This inspection wasn't just about the unusual appearance of the stadium.
'We also focused on the value for money of the nearly 35 million baht of public funds, ensuring that the public would receive maximum benefit and that the project was transparent at every stage.'
Running tracks use smooth curves instead of angles because sharp turns increase the risk of slipping and injury. Curves allow runners to safely maintain momentum as they reach the track's bends.
