Around 100 of the large birds escaped from the farm in Chongzuo City in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on January 8 after their caretaker reportedly forgot to close the door of the enclosure after feeding them.
Footage shows the ostrich herd sprinting through sidewalks and roads as officers tried to chase after them. Civilians also lent a hand in marshalling the runaway birds. Animal control has reportedly rounded up most of the ostriches, with about 20 still missing.
Mr. Zhong, the person in charge of the farm, said: 'The farm workers forgot to close the door after feeding. It's unlikely that the remaining ostriches will appear in the city.'
Police have asked the public to immediately report any ostrich sightings, and to not harbor the fugitive birds in their homes.
The largest ostrich in the escaped group is believed to weigh more than 200 pounds. Each ostrich is said to cost between 2,000 to 4,000 yuan, depending on how long they have been raised.
