This is the terrifying moment a wild leopard gatecrashed a wedding reception in India.
Hundreds of guests were tucking into their dinner when the predator wandered into the lavishly decorated venue in Lucknow City, Uttar Pradesh state, on February 12.
The locals said they initially thought the wedding organisers were pranking them. However, chaos erupted when the sinister leopard began stalking toward their tables full of food. They stampeded out of the reception hall with two cameramen injured in the crush of people.
Police and local forest officials arrived at the scene after receiving a report at around 11:40 pm. Cops escorted the frightened guests away from the building as wildlife workers scanned the premises for the beast.
Footage shows the team confronting the leopard on a flight of stairs as screaming was heard from outside. Snarling and baring its fangs, the wild animal pounced on an officer's firearm before retreating to the second floor of the building, where it was seen on CCTV prowling the corridor.
Local forest officer Sitanshu Pandey said: 'Officers cautiously entered the marriage hall, scanning for any signs of the leopard. As they walked onto the second floor, they discovered that the animal had taken refuge behind broken furniture.
'Just as forest guard Muqaddar Ali approached the animal, it lunged at him and slashed his right hand. Despite the injury, the guard managed to retreat as his colleagues stepped in to contain the situation. They opened fire with tranquilisers.'
Conservationists carried the paralysed leopard out of the building on a stretcher following the four-hour standoff.
The injured officer and cameramen were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishwajeet Srivastava said the wedding was organised by a resident named Deepak Kumar for his sister. He added the leopard had entered through a tent at the back of the venue.
The leopard has been handed over to the local forest department.
Local reports indicate that injuries and fatalities from leopard attacks have been increasing in India. Statistics show there have been 551 reported deaths from leopard and tiger attacks over 20 years.
Conservationists found that the leopard population in India has grown from 12,852 in 2018, to 13,874 in 2022, according to the 'Status of Leopards in India 2022' report released by the Union Environment Ministry.
However, the development of homes in and around forests has led to an increase in conflicts with humans.
On December 6 last year, a leopard mauled a two-year-old boy to death before being captured by locals in the village of Shirhama, Mawar, Handwara, in Kupwara district. Residents found the child in a pool of blood and rushed him to the hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
