This is the heart-stopping moment a resident narrowly escaped being crushed when an elevator suddenly shot upward as he stepped out.
CCTV footage shows the man entering the lift and pressing the ground floor button in Gujarat, India, on Tuesday.
He was then seen leaning against the lift wall while waiting to exit at the Sardar Heights residential complex in Valsad.
As the doors opened, he stepped out of the cabin. Seconds later, the elevator suddenly lurched upward while the doors were still open, narrowly trapping him between the floor and the moving lift.
The man's head struck the hoistway entrance frame, knocking him off balance and sending him crashing to the ground. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital, where he was later declared out of danger.
Preliminary findings suggested the malfunction was caused by a technical fault in the lift's drive system. The elevator was later taken out of service.
Authorities have since ordered inspections of all 36 elevators in the residential complex.
